Tooth Extractions
in Raleigh, NC

Dental extractions are never a favorite dental service among patients, but they can sometimes be necessary to remove a tooth that cannot be treated with a filling or root canal or restored using a crown or bridge. Our office also provides wisdom tooth removals for patients who need one or more wisdom teeth removed. To learn more about our services or schedule your next visit, please contact us!

Why are tooth extractions performed?

We try to reserve dental extractions as a last resort, but sometimes they are the best treatment option for a patient. Common reasons patients receive dental extractions include:

  • Untreatable tooth decay
  • Severe dental trauma
  • Advanced periodontitis
  • Infection or abscess
  • Crowded or impacted teeth

Are dental extractions painful?

Before your procedure begins, we will use a local anesthetic to numb your gums. This will stop the nerves from sending pain signals to your brain, but it’s likely that you will still feel pressure on your tooth. Once your procedure is complete and the numbness begins to wear off, we will provide you with aftercare instructions to keep the pain and discomfort to a minimum. If you feel like you are in an abnormal amount of pain or develop a fever at any point, please contact our office.

Can I go back to work or school after a dental extraction?

Patients who have one or more teeth removed should plan to go straight home after their appointment to rest for the remainder of the day. Some patients are advised to take a few days off from their normal routines, depending on how many teeth are removed. Resting and avoiding physical activities like exercising is important for the healing process, otherwise you may develop a painful complication called a dry socket.
