What do fluoride treatments do?
Dental fluoride treatment can help prevent tooth decay from developing, slow decay down, or prevent decay from worsening. Fluoride treatment for kids and fluoride treatment for adults make the outer surface of the enamel more resistant to acid attacks that cause decay. While fluoride can be found in toothpaste or other dental products, a preventive fluoride treatment with our office can provide more concentrated fluoride for better protection.

When should children start fluoride treatments?
Fluoride treatment for kids can begin as soon as the first tooth sprouts. This is typically around six months. However, Dr. Metwally and our team will thoroughly evaluate your child’s oral health to determine when and how often they should receive fluoride treatment. Along with proper brushing and flossing and a healthy, balanced diet, fluoride treatment for kids is one of the best ways to prevent cavities.

How are fluoride treatments done?
When you visit our office for dental fluoride treatment, we’ll examine your teeth and gums to ensure there aren’t existing dental problems. If your oral health is in good condition, we will remove any bits of plaque to prepare your teeth for the fluoride, then apply fluoride through a rinse, gel, foam, or varnish. We then ask you to wait at least thirty minutes until eating or drinking. Fluoride treatment for kids and fluoride treatment for adults may vary slightly based on how much fluoride is applied and how often treatment should be scheduled.
