Why do I need a root canal?

Root canals must be performed when the nerves and tissue inside a tooth become infected. This can happen due to excessive tooth decay or because harmful bacteria was able to make its way inside the canal through a cracked or chipped tooth. It’s important to not delay a root canal treatment for too long, or else the infection can spread and cause more serious consequences in the future.

How will I know if I need a root canal?

Patients can sometimes tell that something is wrong with a particular tooth, but in other cases, they have very few to no noticeable symptoms. In either case, it’s important to have a dental professional examine your smile to determine what treatment is needed. Symptoms that may indicate that you need a root canal include:

  • Persistent Tooth Pain
  • Tooth Discoloration
  • Sudden Sensitivity to Heat and Cold
  • Gum Irritation or Tenderness
  • Bump on Gums Near Tooth

What happens when you get a root canal?

First, the gums are completely numbed using a local anesthetic. Then, a small hole is created in the top of the tooth so the inside can be accessed. The infected dental pulp must be cleared out, and the inside of the tooth is then cleaned and sealed. Once the infection has been treated, a temporary crown must be placed. At the follow-up visit, we will ensure everything looks good before placing your permanent dental crown.
